The grim reality for many in lower income Black and Hispanic neighborhoods in Los Angeles and increasingly other cities is garbage street dumping. Not just garbage but every item of clothing, furnishings, junk auto parts, bikes and most worrying, inflammable materials. The safety, environmental, and health, and fire hazard from the dumps are enormous.

Worse, sanitation department officials routinely ignore the desperate pleas from residents to clean the mess up. They are oblivious to the criticism that these street dumps would never be allowed in white middle-class neighborhoods. They are just as oblivious to the reminder that the residents in minority neighborhoods pay the same taxes as those in other neighborhoods for trash clean up and clear up.

The trash dumps are not just a product of clandestine, illegal, overnight dumping. They have accumulated over weeks.

How does this continue to happen? Countless residents, business owners in the area, as well as motorists and pedestrians, see them daily.

These same homeowners, renters and businesspersons must live with the enormous toxic danger that the garbage pileups pose.

These damaging health hazards imperil too many Black and Hispanic lives. The time for even greater action on L.A. and other cities mounting garbage mountains is now.
